Several things can occur during development that lead obstruction on the duodenum.

Duodenal atresia is when the duodenal channel (lumen) doesn't recanalize during development.

Duodenal volvulus is when the duodenum is twisted around itself.

The formation of Ladd's bands: abnormal tissue (folds of peritoneum) that is often seen in cases of malrotation.

The cecum and appendix are normally attached to the right lower abdominal wall are unattached in the upper abdomen when malrotation occurs and the Ladd Bands attach the cecum to the duodenum and compress it.
