Data from the Human Genome Project revealed that humans, considered among the most complex of all organisms, have fewer genes and less DNA than some simpler organisms. Explain how a species can be more complex than another even though it possesses fewer genes.

Not all the genes in the human genome have been identified, but the 20,000 genes is far fewer than the predicted number of 80,000 to 100,000 . In addition, there are many more different proteins in the human body than there are genes. This discrepancy is explained by the fact that the mRNAs from over 90 of our genes are processed in several ways so that a genome with 20,000 to 25,000 genes can produce several hundred thousand different proteins.
