As Henry Ford famously said, "If I'd asked people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse."  Customers don't always know what they really want, or what could be possible.  Relying solely on customers in innovation can result in short-sighted product development and miss real potential breakthroughs because customers may not be able to conceptualize ground-breaking innovations.
