Critique Erikson's concept of autonomy in toddlerhood. In your discussion, explain Erikson's ideas and indicate whether you believe that all emotionally healthy toddlers must achieve a sense of autonomy. Cite cross-cultural and gender theories and research to support your arguments.

Suggested Responses: Students should accurately describe Erikson's ideas about a struggle between autonomy and shame and doubt. They should take a position on whether all children strive for autonomy. If they believe all children do, they must explain/critique cross-cultural and gender studies that indicate otherwise. If they believe that autonomy is not universal, they must defend this position, relying on cross-cultural and gender work.
