a dog is a carrier of the recessive allele (h) for diaphragmatic hernia, having inherited it from his grandsire. The frequency of the h allele is 0.05 in this dog's breed. Use a Punnett square to estimate the frequency of affected (hh), non inbred pups from matings of the dog to unrelated females.

If there is a .05 chance that an animal carries this "h" allele, that means there is half that chance you will have a female with the "h" allele (as there are half females and half males in a population). This means there is a .025 chance or 1/40 chance a female is a carrier of the allele. Since the male is heterozygote, and the subsequent female has to be a heterozygote that means there is a 1/4 chance the allele will be expressed in mating. To find the total probability of the allele showing up you would multiple (1/40)(1/4) = 1/160 chance progeny will have the diaphragmatic hernia.
