a catalyst is a passive device to facilitate chemical reactions as opposed to an enzyme which is an active process which actually forces the chemical reaction to take place

Simply put, all enzymes are catalysts, but not all catalysts are enzymes.

Heat, physical shaking, or metal particles can act as catalysts, but they are not enzymes, primarily because all enzymes are proteins.

Enzymes are biological catalysts that are made of protein. They act much in the same way as other catalysts by lowering the activation energy of a reaction by bringing the reactants in close proximity and correct orientation to react in the desired way.

Enzymes are very specific to their reactants and products, whereas most inorganic catalysts (such as the platinum in the catalytic converter in your car) will catalyze a similar reaction with many different compounds.

Enzymes and Catalysts can break down substances, but usually a catalyst is a helper to an enzyme, it helps complete the reaction!
