 glucose and fructose are monosaccharides or single sugars. Sugars are made from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

 that still doesn't help. can you like dumb it down for like an eighth grader??

C is carbon, H his hydrogen, O is oxygen, R is any length of carbons and hydrogens (called alkyl groups).

A monosaccharide is a single sugar molecule.  If you string together a bunch of monosacharrides, you get a polysaccharide.
