Active transport is an active process requiring the input of energy, e.g. ATP
Diffusion is a passive process due to a concentration gradient, energy is not needed

Energy.  Active transport with involve the use of ATP, simple diffusion is a passive process down a concentration gradient.

About the same as the difference between conduction and forced convection, except that usually molecules or ions diffuse through a fluid, rather than through a solid.  If gold and copper are brought into intimate contact, there is some solid diffusion, but it has no perceptible effect beyond the interface.

Energy is required in active transport, in diffusion it is not.
