Do you just have to memorize them? Or is there a way to figure this out?

Basically you need to just memorize.

You can find patterns in some of the polyatomic ions.
For example:

sulfate = SO4^2-
sulfite= SO3^2-

If you ever need to name an acid by looking at an equation like

H2SO4 = SULFURIC ACID

SO4 is sulfate= anything with  -ate is -ic acid

H2SO3 = SULFUROUS ACID

SO3 is sulfite= anything with -ite is -ous acid

I hope this helps with something Slight Smile
