Why are there so many exotic particles when all that's needed are photons, up and down quarks, and electrons?

What are exotic particles such as top quarks for?

All of them serve a purpose in the way everything works.  Just because we'd like for things to be simple doesn't mean that they are.

An understanding of all of these particles, how they act, how they are create/destroyed, etc. requires extensive education in physics.  That's why there are so few experts in these sort of things, because they're complicated!

Sure, all that are needed for current technology and its associated professions may be photons, electrons, and a few quarks.  Think about all that was needed 100 years ago, and the leaps in technology since then.  The better we understand how things actually work, the more we can put these things to use making our lives better.

The difficulty is for humans to try to rationalise things into a simple model which does not exist.

Physicists devise more and more exotic scientific models ro explain more and more exotic results in situations which do not apply to real life on earth.
if you want to challenge yourself to the impossibilty of rationalisation. Think of infinity - the biggest nu,ber you can think of - then add one or double it the cube it - .....

We mortals cannot understand such things but can use maths to describe them.

The machinery for detecting such particles becomes more and more advanced and sensitive, so obviously its ability to find these particles goes accordingly.

If you lived on an island in the middle of the ocean....Hawaii comes to mind, you'd never know there was other land out there unless someone built a water craft capable of navigating the ocean to make such discoveries.

All the particles have a function and quarks are the only particles that I am aware of that function with the four basic forces in nature.

I recommend you do a search and read a little for more details or specific info.

HI

It isn't that we need them . Finding out what other particles there are Maybe  Gets us  closer to finding out more of the universes secrets  Now Physicists are talking about a  particle called a newon  What if we could find a certain particle that would provide  cheep and non polluting energy for the whole world

Most of the exotic particles are needed to explain how ups, downs & electrons can interact with one another.

In my Fractal Foam Model of Universes, all particles consist of collections of ethereal shear waves; they interact with one another because they exchange momentum with ethereal pressure waves. Each type of particle is a chaotic attractor bringing order to the random sea of pressure waves and shear waves.
