A caption of a picture from wikipedia:-"One possible signature of a Higgs boson from a simulated proton?proton collision. It decays almost immediately into two jets of hadrons and two electrons, visible as lines."

Could someone explain the science behind this?

Simulated? Nothing is worth getting excited about if it's only "simulated". Science requires the real thing!

The "Duck Test"

The Standard Model of Quantum Mechanics predicts predicted what it should look like.  That picture is what theory predicts the collision and particle trails could look like.  I assume CERN saw something that looks close to that.

If it looks like a duck and it waddles like a duck and it flies like a duck and it swims like a duck and it flocks like a duck and it is seen with other birds known to be ducks, you can be pretty sure what you are dealing with is a duck
