Diabetes mellitus causes hyperglycemia such that blood glucose levels exceed the renal threshold for glucose. Thus some glucose is eliminated in the urine. Because all solutes exert an osmotic force for water movement, the presence of glucose in the filtrate of a person with diabetes causes more water to be in the filtrate and eliminated in the urine.
