Why did Mendel remove the male parts from the flowers before he cross-pollinated them?

Mendel's experiments depended on knowing what the parents were of any cross he made.  Peas are self-pollinated, so to prevent that he removed the male parts so that no pollen would be involved in the production of peas that Mendel, himself, did not introduce to the flower.
