An ion experiences a magnetic force of 4.8  10-16 N when moving in the positive x direction but no magnetic force when moving in the positive y direction. What is the magnitude of the magnetic force exerted on the ion when it moves in the x-y plane along the line x = y. Assume that the ion's speed is the same in all cases.

The magnetic flux must be parallel to the y-axis since movement in that direction causes no force.

Therefore the force in the x direction is the maximum force (Fmax)

So the force along x=y is Fmax * sin45 = 4.8 * .707 * 10^-16N = 3.4 * 10^-16 N
