If a car is speeding down a road at 40 miles/hour (mph), how long is the stopping distance D40 compared to the stopping distance D25 if the driver were going at the posted speed limit of 25 mph?

As a function of his speed, v, the stopping distance is given by

d = kv^2

Where k is a constant (function of friction, and other factors that are characteristic of the specific car)

So, d(40)/d(25) = (40/25)^2 = 2.56. So, d(40) is 156% longer than d(25).
