Which of the following is NOT an example of how not-for-profit organizations use marketing?
A) A museum conducts a city-wide mailing to attract new membership.
B) The Red Cross is investigating the use of alcohol-based drugs for children's diseases.
C) A Belgium cultural society wants to inform American tourists that French fries were invented there.
D) The Sierra Club is holding a masked costume ball for Halloween in San Francisco.

I was thinking D because of it being a costume ball but why would the Red Cross be testing drugs alcohol since they focus on disaster relief and blood donations.

In A, B, and D, the organizations are doing something to spread awareness of their existence. In A, sending mail to people to increase membership is a way to market. In C, the society is trying to bring attention to Belgium and away from France. In D, going to the costume ball sponsored by the Sierra Club will make the attendees aware of the Sierra Club's existence, thus acting as marketing.

In B, the Red Cross is not spreading news or asking for donations regarding investigating alcohol-based drugs; it is simply doing it. Granted, one could make it a high-profile investigation with lots of press coverage, but that isn't specified in the answer. I would say that B would be the best answer, for it is the least obvious way to market an organization.
