Lichens are found on house roofs, tree trunks, rocks, and soils. A lichen contains a fungus (mycobiont), which attaches to the surface and provides its mutualistic partner, either an alga or cyanobacterium (photobiont), with an increase in bioavailable inorganic nutrients. The fungus also prevents desiccation of the photobiont by sequestering water. The photobiont produces organic carbon (sugars), which benefits the mycobiont. Certain cyanobacteria found in association with fungi also provide a fixed nitrogen source.
