Lactose intolerance is not considered a genetic disorder, but rather a variation in gene expression because there is no faulty gene or metabolic pathway breakdown involved. Lactose intolerance is due to wide phenotypic differences in the ability to digest lactose resulting from various normal' allelic combinations. These allelic combinations do not contain any faulty' genes that disrupt normal metabolism, but rather express themselves normally,' making some people lactose intolerant and others not.
