There are other chemical compounds that can be used to mimic lactose and fool E. coli's proteins. X-gal is a colorless molecule that has a structure very similar to lactose. It's similar enough that b-galactosidase will split it into 2 pieces. One of these piece has a blue color. IPTG is another lactose mimic. B-galactoside won't break it apart, but it will bind to repressor protein and hasthe same effect on it that lactose does. If you add both x-gal and IPTG to the E. coli's media, what would you expect to happen compared to a control where neither of these compounds were added. Assume there is no lactose in the media.
