When a verticle lever is pushed forward or pulled backward, the effect is a linear movement to the right or left (perpendicular to the original movement).  This is probably an embarassingly simple mechanism, but not seeing it in motion is baffling me at the moment.  Here's a picture of what prompted this question:

Shifting the gear selector forward or backward causes a free floating gear (hidden in the housing) on a perpendicular shaft to slide on the shaft to the left or right.  What is this kind of motion transfer called, and how does it happen?
