Suppose you are driving on the interstate at 82 mph when you see a highway patrol car parked up ahead. You apply your brakes, decelerating at a constant rate of 3.6 mph/sec until you have reduced your speed to 65 mph. You then maintain a constant speed of 65 mph. You pass the patrol car 14 seconds after you initially applied the brakes and are relieved that he doesn't pull out after you. How far away was the highway patrol car when you first saw it?

Distance and time during deceleration.
Givens
======
vi = 82 mph = 82 * 1 hr / 3600 seconds = 0.02278 miles / second
vf = 65 mph = 65 * 1 hr/ 3500  = 0.01806 miles / second
a = - 3.6 mph/sec = -3.6 miles/hr / second  * 1 hr /3600 second =  - 0.01 miles / second ^2

Find t first
t = (vf - vi)/a
t = (0.01806 - 0.02278) / (- 0.01) = 0.472 second.

Now the distance.
vf^2 = vi^2 + 2*a*d
0.02278^2 = 0.01806^2 + 2*0.01*d Your answer will be in miles.
0.0001928 / 0.02 = 0.009638 miles.

If you want this distance in feet, multiply by 5280 which is 50.89 feet which is not very realistic: it takes much more than 50 feet to slow from 82 to 65 and it take much longer than 1/2 second to do it.

Part Two
=======
Find the time travelled at 65 mph
14 seconds - 0.472 seconds = 13.528 seconds.
v = 0.01806 miles/second

Now find the distance travelled in this time.
d = 0.01806 miles / second * 13.528 seconds.
d = 0.2443 miles and again if you want this in feet multiply by 5280 which is 1290 feet.

The total distance is 50.89 feet + 1290 feet = 1341 feet or about 1/4 mile or say 3 blocks. I think the question is extremely valuable. If you drive, you should know things like this especially if you live where there is snow (as I do). The most critical road hazard is not people speaking on cell phones or speeding. The most dangerous thing that people do is follow the car in front  too closely. (tailgating) or driving at speeds which ignore the conditions.

Please excuse the preaching. Sorry about that. I can't resist when I see this kind of question.
