Social loafing refers to the phenomenon of reduced efforts per person in large groups. Individuals in larger groups are more likely than those in smaller groups to assume that other members will "carry the load." In larger groups, individual members' specific contributions are less easily identified. This encourages "loafing."

In order to counteract this phenomenon, a group's task has to be structured in a manner that will encourage full participation by its members. Managers can also encourage higher individual levels of effort on group projects by building in some form of acknowledgement of each member's contributions to the final outcome of the project.
