Julian's parents asked him how he liked the concert last night. Julian responded with, "Wow, it was totally bad! I'm going out to get their CD." His parents wonder, "If the concert was bad, why would you want to get their CD?" Explain the language barrier most likely involved in this exchange.

Bypassing occurs when the same word has a different meaning for different people. In this case, the word "bad" is used by Julian to actually mean "good" reflecting a meaning unique to his generation or peer group. The parents understand the meaning of "bad" as "not good."
