What happens to electrons in an atom when energy is absorbed? What about when energy is created?

If the added energy corresponds to an energy gap between stationary states, then the electron absorbs the energy and is promoted to the upper state.  Energy cannot be "created" by an atom, except via thermonuclear processes.
