When a hydrocarbon is burnt in excess oxygen, 4.4 grams of carbon dioxide and 1.8 grams of water are made. Find the empirical formula of the hydrocarbon. Can you also explain it to me?

mass of C in 4.4 g of CO2 = 12 (MM C) / 44 (MM CO2)  x 4.4g = 1.2 g of C or 1.2 / 12 moles of C = .1 moles

Mass  of H in 1.8g of water = 2 / 18 x 1.8 g = .2 g and .2 moles of H

molar ratio of C : H = .1 : .2 or 1 :2

empirical formula is CH2
