Hi there,

 Can someone tell me how to write the algebraic expression for the following?

  Andy has c cents that is all in dimes.

  How many dimes does he have?

Sincerely,

Andy has some number of dimes; call this number 'x'.  The total of all the dimes is c cents.  A dime is 10 cents.

10 x = c

determine what the variables are...
c = cents in dimes
n = number of dimes (this one is made up)

visualize the problem...
if he has 1 dime, he has 10 cents
if he has 2 dimes, he has 20 cents
if he has 3 dimes, he has 30 cents

rewrite in algebraic terms...
if n = 1, c = 10
if n = 2, c = 20
if n = 3, c = 30

look for a pattern...
it seems that every time n increases by 1, c increases by 10. In other words, c equals whatever n happens to be times 10.

write it algebraically...
c = 10n

test it out...
if n is 1, then c is 10 * 1 = 10
if n is 2, then c is 10 * 2 = 20
if n is 3, then c is 10 * 3 = 30

this formula agrees with the pattern we came up with earlier.

solve for n, which is the number of dimes...

c = 10n

divide both sides by 10...

c/10 = n

so, the solution is...

n = c/10
