Ans: Most mitochondrial proteins are encoded by nuclear DNA, translated in the cytoplasm and imported into mitochondria. The mitochondrial DNA of mammals only encodes 13 proteins and fewer than 20 noncoding RNAs, such as tRNAs and rRNAs. Mitochondrial genes are transcribed and translated within the organelle, using organelle-specific RNA polymerase and ribosomes.
