You have now learned why consumption of all the essential trace minerals is critical for your health. You have also learned about some conditions, such as hemochromatosis, that require individuals (like David) to make sure they do not consume too much of particular nutrients (like iron). Answer to #1

Reducing dietary iron intake means that David would consume less red meat, some nuts, molasses, and fortified cereals, and avoid consuming fresh produce and citrus together. Some dietary substitutions for red meat could be more complementation of grain and legume products, more soy/dairy products, and of course, eggs, all of which would provide David with adequate protein but less iron. I think avoiding nuts, molasses, and fortified cereals would not be a considerable hardship given the variety of food choice available in todays supermarket.

At the Pepperdine University health center, there is no availability for therapeutic phlebotomies and no insurance to pay for them.

Answer to #5

Hereditary hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder usually caused by mutations in the HFE gene located on chromosone 6. Most likely, David and his wife are contemplating having their baby tested for this disease for purposes of prevention. Early symptoms of this disease can be unnoticeable; however, later symptoms such as liver cirrhosis, possibly developing into liver cancer, or iron deposits in the pancreas resulting in diabetes or cardiomyopathy or arthritis are possibly preventable.
