The term endosymbiosis refers to when one organism lives inside the other, and they typical act as one organism.  The theory of secondary endosymbiosis is a theory to explain how and why certain organelles, such as mitochondria, came live inside other cells. It is believed that organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplast used to live freely on their own. However, they were engulfed by other cells. Over time the relationship proved mutual and the engulfed organelle became a living part of the cell that engulfed it. The biggest evidence for this theory is that the mitochondria and the chloroplast have their own distinct DNA.
