Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen molecules. An aliphatic hydrocarbon is a compound lacking aromaticity. Aromatic hydrocarbons also have at least one conjugated ring that is more stable than predicted by the empty orbitals, lone pairs, or unsaturated bonds. Examples of aliphatic hydrocarbons include ethylene, hexane, methane, and octane. Aromatic hydrocarbon examples include benzene, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), naphthalene, toluene, and xylene.
