The Earth's surface is about 70% water. Mars's diameter is about half the Earth's, but it has no surface water. Compare the land areas of the two planets.

Instruction

1. Draw diagrams of Earth and Mars

2. Label physical quantities using variables.

3. Solve this problem using only the information given in the problem.

Please assume you don't know the formula for SA of a sphere, or the dimensions/lengths of earth. remember that area is proportional to length

Area of sphere is 4 x π x r2

Since we are comparing two spheres, we can forget the 4 x π part, and only focus on r2

If both were fully land, the ratio would be the square of 2 to 1, since we're told it's roughly have the diameter, therefore also half the radius, which is 4 to 1.

But we know that only 30 percent of earth is dry, so now it becomes 0.3 x (4 to 1)

This is roughly which is 1.2 to 1.
