Oncology patients are often stereotyped as not being candidates for aggressive treatment, but these patients should not be denied care. They frequently become acutely ill. Even during their final hours, high-acuity care may be appropriate because intensive efforts may be required to ensure suffering is minimized. Also there is often no timetable for when a patient progresses from very ill to actually dying.

#2

Priority 3. She has a reduced likelihood of recovery due to her metastatic colon cancer. She may receive oxygen and antibiotics to relieve the shortness of breath and treat the pneumonia. Additionally, she has advanced directives. Priorities 1 and 2 are patients for whom there are no limits on the extent of intended interventions. She is not a Priority 4 at this time because she does not have terminal illness and is not facing immediate death.
