Ron is expressing his love for Hermione who is standing on a
platform. Her other love Krum is off to the side, seeking her
hand in marriage. Hermione looks down to Ron at an angle of
20° and looks down to Krum at an angle of 18°. If Krum is
standing 10 m further away from the base of the platform than
Ron is standing, what is the distance between the 2 gentlemen,
to one decimal place?

Here's how I envisioned it:



Set the two expressions equal to one another:



By the way, contextually the questions doesn't make sense. We are told that Krum is 18 degrees away, yet is 10 meters further. If someone is further, their angle of depression should be greater than then other person in which they're claiming to be closer. Think about it for a second Grinning Face with Smiling Eyes

Hey Bio_man I was just wondering if when you did xtan18-xtan20=10tan20 why did one of the x's disappear and one of them stay there?

I factored out the x on the left side, it is in common in both terms. For example

2x + 3x
x(2+3)
x(5)

does that make sense?

Ohhhh that makes sense
Also I just checked with my teacher and they said that the answer is supposed to be 140.08 (it was originally your answer but it got crossed out) Is there a reason why its different?

Do you think perhaps he realized what we said earlier about the angles and made it the other way around?

I can check if you'd like. Otherwise my work checks out out the way it is.
