DNA-polymorphism is when there is one of two or more alleles of a chromosomal locus that differ in nucleotide sequence or have variable numbers of repeated nucleotide units. To know whether a chromosomal locus is polymorphic, you compare genomes (for example, the two haploid genomes of a diploid organism or the two diploid genomes of two diploid organisms). DNA polymorphisms can be found in coding and in non-coding regions.

Thank you but that is not exactly what I was looking for. I am well aware of what polymorphisms are, but I am not sure how they arise or what causes them.. Do you by any chance have an idea about that?

I was thinking natural selection or evolution or degeneracy of the genetic code, but I am not sure..

DNA polymorphisms arise as a result of random/spontaneous mutations
