Darwin said organisms were constantly in the process of evolution, through the passing-on of helpful alleles, and the destruction of deleterious ones. But Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium suggests that sometimes things stay the same, rather than changing. In some populations, no allele is favoured over the other, the genetic composition of the population remains constant, and no evolution occurs.
Punctuated equilibrium, similarly, suggests that there are periods of change followed by long periods of no change. Darwin believed that every generation led to evolution. Punctuated equilibrium suggests that there are times when evolution is not happening.
