In the gills of a fish, the blood flows in the opposite direction to the flow of water. What is the advantage of this in terms of gas exchange in comparison to a system in which blood and water flow in the same direction?  Grinning Face

Blood entering the gill is oxygen-rich and therefore can maximize gas exchange with the water.
