Review the formula for effective population size. Imagine a population of 1,000 small rodents. Of these, 300 are breeding females, 300 are breeding males, and 400 are nonbreeding juveniles. What is the effective population size?   

A) 1,200      B) 600      C) 300      D) 1,000      E) 400

Effective population size deals with individuals that are potentially able to breed, so ignore the nonbreeding juveniles. You can then use the formula Ne=4Nm*Nf/(Nm+Nf), where Ne is the effective population size, Nm is the number of breeding males, and Nf is the number of breeding females. When you plug in 300 for the number of breeding males and number of breeding females and solve you get B) 600.

This assumes that every breeding individual has an equal chance of mating. It gets more complicated if they don't.
