Vestigial structures are greatly reduced in size, although they may retain some function (for example, the human vermiform appendix no longer is a pouch for fermenting cellulose, but it remains as an immune system structure).

Homologous structures derive from the same embryonal tissues.  The human arm, the whale pectoral fin, and the bat wing are homologous structures.  Homologous structures may be vestigial, such as the residual forelimb bones of the legless lizards or the kiwi.
