The autoionization of water is the reaction of water with itself. (Auto means "self").

This reaction relates to the acid-base section of high school chemistry. Remember that an acid donates H+ while a base accepts H+.

If you treat one H2O as an acid and the other H2O as a base, you obtain the following:

H2O (l) + H2O (l) Leftwards Arrow> OH- (aq) + H3O+ (aq), where the first H2O loses an H+ and the second H2O gains it.
