* DNA replication before meiosis
* crossing over
* chromosome alignment in metaphase I and separation in anaphase I
* chromosome alignment in metaphase II and separation in anaphase II
* fertilization

I know that DNA replication is purely hereditary. But I cannot figure out the other ones - in terms of if they are just contributing to genetic variation or if they are contributing to both.
