The innate immune system includes physical and chemical barriers, like the skin and low pH, and also interferons and complement system activation. In addition, phagocytes, natural killer cells, and other non-specific components, such as defensins. It is always “on”, no need for previous exposure and nonspecific, Rapid, and NO memory capacity. Also includes the secretion of lysozymes, proteases, and iron-sequestering proteins.
