We ausculate for any number of possible pathologies which may be associated with valves, e.g. murmurs, their 'quality' and characteristics to help us determine what the underlying pathology is.  The areas chosen are typically the best places to ausculate for underlying pathology in a given patient.  Besides valvulopathy, we can used these methods to determine underlying anatomic variation and/or hypertrophy of the myocardium.

Discounting gallops, which nobody is good at hearing, those are the areas where murmurs from valve disease show up. Some of us are even old enough to remember when there wasn't an echocardiogram behind every bush, and we had to rely heavily on our ears to make such diagnoses.
