Define all the key concepts relevant to statuses and roles: status, master status, ascribed statuses, achieved statuses, role, role conflict, role set, and role strain. Then write about your choice of any three of these concepts as they apply to your own life. For example, what are your ascribed statuses and your achieved statuses, and in what situations have you experienced role strain or role conflict?

A good answer will include definitions of each term. Status is defined as a social position that a person holds. Master status is a status that has special importance for social identity, often shaping a person's entire life. Ascribed status is a social position a person receives at birth or takes on involuntarily later in life. Achieved status refers to a social position a person takes on voluntarily that reflects personal ability and effort. Role refers to behaviour expected of someone who holds a particular status. Role conflict refers to conflict among the roles corresponding to two or more statuses. Role set is the number of roles attached to a single status. Role strain is tension among the roles connected to a single status. The student should write about how three of these apply to everyday experience. For example, an achieved status they might identify is that of student. They might experience role conflict when the demands of being a student (studying, etc.) conflict with the demands of another status (e.g., as a parent, they are expected to spend time with children).
