* Selective attention: We focus on specific stimuli and ignore others. We tend to focus on those things that relate to our needs and wants. We also attend to information that is moving, interesting, novel, or noisy. So, because we attend to only certain stimuli, we miss others.

* Selective exposure: We tend to put ourselves in situations that reinforce our attitudes, beliefs, values, and behaviours. Because we are more likely to expose ourselves to those situations that reinforce how we make sense of the world, we may close ourselves off to other situations.

* Selective recall: We remember things we want to, and repress or forget those things that are unpleasant, uncomfortable, or unimportant to us. As a result, some information is lost, either because it is too painful or not needed immediately.
