I know seeds cannot germinate without air, but I was wondering - if seeds are placed in boiled water with oil on top, would the testa swell? How far would the seed reach in the process of germination? Also, what would happen to a seed placed in water in a fridge? Thanks (:

The tissues of the seed will imbibe water causing swelling of the seed.  However, without oxygen, the cells of the seed cannot produce enough energy to continue germination and will quickly die.  If seeds are soaked and kept in the refrigerator, the cold temperature will greatly slow or stop germination.
