Ans: In the lytic cycle, the phage infects a bacterium, produces large numbers of progeny phage, and the host bacterium is lysed, releasing the progeny. In the lysogenic cycle, the phage inserts its genome into the bacterial genome and it is stably inherited along with the bacterial chromosome. The process of induction releases the prophage genome and the lytic cycle commences.
