In nonsense-mediated decay, how is a premature termination codon distinguished from the normal termination codon?

Ans: A premature termination codon will have a downstream exon junction complex (EJC) marking the position at which an intron had been spliced out. The normal termination codon will be at the end of the last exon and will have no downstream EJC. Additionally, the termination codon can be recognized as premature if the 3 UTR is recognized as being abnormally long.
