I'm in the process of identifying an unknown chemical, and I'm down to ethyl acetate and hexane (by molar mass).  Do they have similar smells?  Is there anything distinct about their scent that might aid me in identifying them?

No, I don't think they smell the same - I could tell them apart.  But then, I've been doing it for over 50 years.  Ethyl acetate smells like model airplane glue. Hexane smells like lighter fluid.
Burn it.  Hexane will have a yellow, luminlous flame, ethyl acetate will have a clear, blue flame.
